Functional Dentistry

Functional dentistry is a branch of dentistry that treats dental issues as part of an individual’s overall health and well-being. Functional dentists focus on the root causes of dental issues rather the immediate solution to alleviate the condition. They not only focus on immediate treatment, but also uses evidence-based medicine and dentistry to help optimize the patient’s general health as well.

Unlike popular beliefs, functional dentists also attend dental school and had the same educational training as conventional dentists. They also use x-rays and other dental examination methods to diagnose the issues. However, the difference is most evident in the treatment process.

Conventional dentistry focuses on brushing, flossing, mouthwash and visiting a dentist for cleanings twice a year; but functional dentists focus on the diet and lifestyle of the patients to understand the root cause of any persisting dental issues. While traditional dentists perform treatments like root canals and amalgam fillings, they rarely link these to underlying issues. However, functional dentists have a more holistic approach to dentistry and avoid procedures unnecessary procedures and focuses on healing the condition through dietary and lifestyle changes.

Functional dentistry, like functional medicine, takes a proactive approach to health and wellness. By adopting proper lifestyle, diet and hygiene practices, most of the common dental issues like bad breath, cavities and gum diseases can be prevented.

What is the Myo Munchee

We all understand the need for regular exercise and a healthy diet to maintain our general health and wellbeing. But did you know that your facial muscles need to be strengthened just like the other muscles of the body?
Poor facial muscle tone can contribute to ongoing health problems such as snoring and sleep apnoea, bad breath and teeth grinding, temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and headaches as well as issues wlth speech, articulation and hearing.
The Myo Munchee is designed to assist, by exercising and strengthening the facial muscles. Daily chewing of the Myo munchee, for as little as 10 minutes, is a simple and inexpensive part of preventative dental care and hygiene.
Dentistry is increasingly about prevention rather than cure, and a Myo munchee is designed to prevent many common dental problems. The Myo Munchee is available in a range of sizes to assist with various oral issues in people of all ages from 18 months to adult

The Myo Munchee assists in the development of jaw, palate and facial structure in children. It promotes healthy development of teeth, as well as improve lip and tongue tone and function and encourage nose breathing.

Children who have a pacifier, or are thumb or finger suckers will develop poor oral posture habits – which can over time interfere with optimal facial development. With parental help, children may overcome poor oral habits which are detrimental to overall health, including mouth breathing, tongue thrusting and poor chewing habits.

One of the reasons that children mouth breathe is that there is poor tone and function of the lips and face. Using a Myo Munchee can assist by exercising these muscles to improve the tone as well as acting as a tool for retraining the nasal breathing pattern (because the Munchee is a mouthful you can’t breathe through your mouth while using it correctly). Children from 18 months of age may use the Myo Munchee for 5-10 minutes daily while colouring-in, watching TV or reading.

Correct use of a Myo Munchee from an early age may lessen and, in some cases, eliminate the need for your child ever to need braces or other expensive orthodontic treatment. Don’t wait for orthodontic problems to develop – you can help your child from the age of 18 months.

Nothing affects facial growth more adversely than mouth breathing over a period of years. When a child or adult uses the mouth for breathing, the tongue moves to the floor of the mouth instead of the roof of the mouth. This incorrect oral posture can over time have long term impacts on facial growth and development.

Mouth breathing may result in bite problems, buck teeth and recession of the lower jaw. Studies (Trosman and Trosman 2017) have shown that children with breathing obstruction can have restless sleep, daytime fatigue and other problems like attention deficit disorder (ADD).

The Myo Munchee offers a real solution for snoring, whilst providing a sound peaceful sleep. It moves the lower jaw forward, opening the airway; it promotes nasal breathing which reduces airway collapse and, through the chewing action, improves the tone and function of the oropharyngeal walls (airway).

Many people will clench and grind their teeth nocturnally and over time this may damage teeth as well as cause trauma to the TM joints. There are various reasons why this nocturnal clenching occurs and finding the underlying cause is important. Nocturnal use of the Myo Munchee allows the joints and muscles of the TMJ to rest in a comfortable position.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain is an increasingly prevalent problem. Today’s fast paced society causes stress which can manifest as headaches, teeth clenching and grinding during our sleep.
Treatment with a dental splint which alters the neuromuscular pattern often helps. The Myo Munchee is a great way to treat the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction because unlike a hard splint, its softness is more appealing to the tissues. It has a cushioning effect and prevents the teeth from touching.

Ear infections are an extremely common health problem for many young children. One of the reasons why young children are prone to ear infections is that their ear drainage tubes – called eustachian tubes are very narrow. If these tubes get blocked with fluid, they are then prone to infections. When a child has underdevelopment of the facial muscle tone due to mouth breathing, pacifier and bottle use and lack of chewing they are not able to efficiently drain the ear tubes. The Myo Munchee can help by exercising the chewing muscles which then pull open the eustachian tubes to drain any fluid. The child is then less likely to develop ear infections.

Crooked teeth in children usually indicate that the oral environment is malfunctioning in some respect. The facial bones of children are very susceptible to environmental influences and habits such as mouth breathing and thumb and pacifier sucking can have long term impacts on how well the jaws grow and whether there will be enough space for the teeth.

Healthy gum tissue requires oral hygiene to prevent deterioration, mainly achieved through appropriate nutrition, regular tooth brushing and flossing, and routine checkups with your dentist. However, there are people in various parts of the world who have never used a toothbrush, yet they still have healthy teeth and gums. These people have achieved optimal oral health and function. Their diet includes dense fibrous foods that need to be chewed. This chewing process cleans their teeth while at the same time massaging their gums and providing excellent exercise for the facial and jaw muscles. Chewing the Myo Munchee imitates this action; strengthening the bone which will, in turn, improve the health of your gums. Using the Myo Munchee tones the gum tissue in the same way that exercise at the gym tones muscles in other parts of the body.

  • Improves bite and facial bone relationships as a result of increased mandibular and maxillary-muscle activity (see Research Osaka University) Citation: Bourke (1991).
  • Promotes nose breathing.
  • Discourages thumb-sucking & other poor oral habits
  • Improves oral hygiene and overall gum health.

The Myo Munchee may assist you to keep your teeth and maintain a younger, healthier mouth in several ways. We all recognise that exercising the body is of paramount importance. But equally important is exercising the muscles and bones of the head, face and mouth.
The bones of the mouth need exercise. The effects of exercise on bone are illustrated by that fact that the bone in the hitting arm of a professional tennis player can be 10-15% larger than the other arm!
Chewing the Myo Munchee also promotes optimal gum health and alleviates stress on the teeth and jaw muscles. It also stimulates saliva production, which assists in better oral hygiene, aids digestion and reduces the likelihood of bad breath.
