A Full Mouth Rehabilitation, also known as full mouth reconstruction or restoration, is another term for a series of treatments performed to restore a patient’s full oral health after they have experienced severe decay, traumatic injury, acid erosion, teeth and gum damages or other issues that affect teeth, gum and jaw.

It is a combination of different restorative dental treatments to fix or rebuild all of the teeth in both the upper and lower jaws, thus getting the mouth back to its best possible health.

Full mouth reconstructions typically involves general or restorative dentists (performing procedures like crowns, bridges and veneers), and can incorporate dental specialists like periodontists (specializing in the gums), oral surgeons, orthodontists (specializing in tooth movements and positions) and endodontists (specializing in the tooth pulp treatment).

Whether you have lost your teeth to decay, periodontal disease or even an accident, you do not have to live without those teeth for the rest of your life, a full mouth rehab is the best solution.

The first step to full mouth rehabilitation begins with a consultation with the dentist. He/she will perform a thorough and comprehensive exam to determine how extensive of a rehab is needed to get your mouth back to its ultimate oral health.

This exam includes:

• X-Rays: These will be used to see what is going on below the surface of the teeth as well as whether there is any decay to worry about. CBCT “3D” scans is needed to evaluate the bone condition in case dental implants are required.
• Gum Health: Combined with perio charting, your dentist and hygienist should be able to determine whether you need periodontal root planning before your rehabilitation. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. You would not want to go through extensive treatment if the foundation of your teeth is weak. Root planning is required when there has been tartar and bacterial build up below the gum line, creating spaces between the teeth and the gums. In some cases, where the teeth are covered with the gum more than usual, the dentist needs to do a gum re-contouring in order to get better aesthetic result. This will all need to be considered before any other treatment is performed.
• History: Your dentist will also go over your dental health history with you. Together, you can look at whether you have lost any teeth as well as what treatments you already have done in the past. If you are missing teeth, replacement is likely to be in your treatment plan.
