We are so exposed to unhealthy outside food that we do not take care of one of the most important sense organ, the one that helps us communicate – Mouth. This sense is vulnerable to numerous bacterial and viral infections. It is time that we understand its vitality and become aware of something known as periodontal diseases, commonly called gum diseases. This article will give you a complete overview of these diseases and suggest steps that can help in avoiding them.

Periodontal (gum) diseases is a kind of an infection present in the tissues that hold the teeth in its original place. This is generally caused due to unhygienic and poor brushing or flossing habits. This allows plague which is a sticky film of bacteria that is built on the teeth and gradually hardens. In advanced stages, these diseases can lead to sore, bleeding gums, and other problems encountered while chewing.

What are its main causes?

Our mouth is always exposed to bacteria. These microorganisms along with the help of mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on our teeth. Regular brushing and flossing can help in getting rid of this plague. However, if they are not done, it can form into a substance known as tartar. In such cases, only a professional dentist or a dental hygienist can remove it.

Other than this, there are several causes and risk factors for gum diseases. Smoking is one of the most significant causes. In fact, dental problems caused due to smoking mostly remain unsuccessful. Other risk factors include diabetes, hormonal changes in girls and women, medications that allow a lesser flow of saliva, certain ailments such as AIDS, and genetic susceptibility.

Symptoms

Some of the main symptoms that indicate immediate consultation with a dentist in Dubai include:

  •        Teeth sensitivity
  •        Teeth loss
  •        Tender and bleeding gums
  •        Bad breath that would not go away
  •        Red and swollen gums
  •        Receding gums or teeth that takes a long time to appear

What is its diagnosis?

Firstly it is advisable to visit a dentist or a dental hygienist. Moving forward, they will examine your gums and note if there are any signs of inflammation. With the help of a tiny ruler known as ‘probe’, they will check and measure any pockets present near the teeth. Generally, in a healthy mouth, the depth of these pockets are between one and three millimeters. In fact, this test of pockets is usually painless.

Lastly, the dentist will also ask for your medical history to analyse if any pre-medical conditions have led to these gum diseases. This is an important step as the dentist will be able to correlate the history with the present condition.

Irrespective of any condition, prevention is always better than cure. Hence, it is advisable to go for regular dental check-ups that will eliminate these conditions in the primary stage itself and keep your teeth healthy and shiny.
